Why We Love Our CHEMEX Coffee Maker!

So many of you sent us messages on Instagram recently after seeing the videos of our Chemex coffee makers. Not only do we use these coffee makers at home every morning, but we also use them to prepare coffee for coffee tastings.
So what is a CHEMEX, and why do we love it?

The CHEMEX® coffeemaker was invented in 1941 by the eccentric chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. Made simply from non-porous, borosilicate glass and fastened with a wood collar and tie, the CHEMEX coffee maker brews coffee without imparting any flavors of its own. The iconic Chemex has remained unchanged for 70 years and counting.
Throughout his career, Dr. Schlumbohm developed over 300 patents, ranging from cocktail shakers to automobiles. His focus was on making everyday objects more functional, attractive, and enjoyable to use.
When designing the CHEMEX®, Schlumbohm desired to not only make brewing the perfect cup simple but also to have the vessel be a thing of beauty. Being a chemist, he studied and understood clearly the chemistry behind the extraction of flavor and caffeine from coffee beans.
It was this knowledge that led him to invent the double-bonded CHEMEX® paper filters for a perfect extraction every time. For the carafe, Schlumbohm was inspired by the Bauhaus school of design and non-porous labware that would impart no flavor of its own. Using these elements, he fashioned the hourglass shape that has now become an iconic part of American history. Made simply from one piece of borosilicate glass and adorned with a wooden collar and rawhide tie, the CHEMEX® is pure in both form and function. It has been recognized and awarded by both the scientific community as well as the art and design communities.
The Chemex® coffeemaker is an elegant, one-piece, hourglass shaped vessel made of high quality, heat resistant glass. The traditional model comes to you with a polished wood collar and leather tie. The collar serves as an insulated handle around the middle of the coffeemaker. Few products in this century can match the flawless blending of design and function of the Chemex®.
The Chemex® coffeemaker, together with Chemex-Bonded® Coffee Filter, makes perfect coffee. Clear, pure, flavorful and without bitterness or sediment every time. The coffee only comes in contact with the scientifically designed filter and non-porous glass. With the Chemex® method, you can make coffee as strong as you like without bitterness. Perfect for iced coffee and coffee flavoring for gourmet recipes. Because of its purity, Chemex® brewed coffee can be covered and stored in the refrigerator for reheating...without losing its flavor!
There are also health benefits to using CHEMEX paper filters! CHEMEX paper filters are based on laboratory grade filter paper, double-bonded thickness to filter out impurities and unhealthy oils, acidity, bitterness, fats, and sediments.
“The cholesterol-raising ingredients in coffee are oily substances called diterpenes, and the two main types in coffee are cafestol (pronounced CAF-es-tol) and kahweol (pronounced KAH-we-awl). They are present either as oily droplets or in the grounds floating in the coffee. But a paper filter traps most of the cafestol and kahweol, so coffee that's been filtered probably has little, if any, effect on cholesterol levels.” – Harvard Study
